UP to 50 people are expected to take part in a wheelchair push on the Malvern Hills organized by a cancer patient to celebrate his birthday.

Vaughn Albone will be in the wheelchair, and family and friends will take turns to push him across the range next Saturday, November 14, when he will be 63..

Mr Albone, of Beauchamp Road, Malvern Link, organised the event to raise money for St Richard's Hospice in Worcester, where he has stayed on occasion since being diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas ten years ago.

He said: "The hospice does a really good job and I wanted to do something to mark my birthday, so we decided on the wheelchair push.

"We'll be starting out from the car park just behind the Malvern Hills Hotel, and I hope we'll be able to go over all the peaks, but it depends on the weather and the conditions.

"We'll reach the Worcestershire Beacon and them go downhill and finish at the Clock Tower in North Malvern Road. We're expecting 40 or 50 people to take part."

Mr Albone is manager of the Gloster Arms football team, and on Sunday, a fundraising event is being held after the team's fixture.

The Gloster is playing Malvern Radar, and the event is being held at Radar's headquarters, Barnards Green Cricket Club, North End Lane, after the match, which starts at 1.30pm.

Steve Harness of Malvern Radar said: "We're rivals on the football field, but the players all know each other, so we're happy to host this event for Vaughn."
