NOT JUST content with offering free computer-based sessions for charities - one kind businessman went a step further by updating one charity's outdated equipment.

Thomas Horton, from Blackpole, was running his #TheWorkTrain sessions to users of Headway Worcestershire's day centre when he realised how old and slow the charity's computers were running.

He was so grateful for the charity's helping getting his project off the ground that he decided to spend around £500 on four new CPUs for Headway to use.

Mr Horton's project sees him offering charities free workshops to teach basic office skills to help boost people's CVs.

Having suffered a brain haemorrhage at birth, he understood the challenges of finding work and was pleased to work with Headway which supports people with acquired brain injuries.

The 30-year-old said: "I wanted to give them the computers as a thank you for helping me get #TheWorkTrain going.

"The project is still in it's infancy but is being so well received by the centre's service users, and they have also said that I can use their computer room to train people from other charities in the area, in the future.

"I wanted to keep it as a surprise but in the end, I did have to tell Julia and Sam but they said they were "overwhelmed" and their IT guys were so excited to get rid of the old ones.

"One service user was also present when I handed them over and he was astonished by how much technology was in such a small machine.

"Robin Walker was also amazed at how good the new machines were."

Samantha Skilbeck, day centre manager at Worcester, said #TheWorkTrain sessions had not only provided volunteering and work opportunities for their clients but also helped build independence with managing personal budgets.

"Like all charities, we have very limited funds to replace old equipment, and such a grand gesture will provide plenty of opportunities for current clients with brain injuries and mental health needs.

"We cannot thank him enough.”

Julia Protesaru, fundraising manager, added: "We are extremely grateful to receive such support from Tom, both from the donation of the computers and his time with the IT project, which has been invaluable.

"The clients were absolutely thrilled to see that they will have an upgrade and are looking forward to the next #TheWorkTrain session which will focus on building a CV, a suggestion that came from our eager service users.”
