A much-loved Worcester park is among 20 in Central England shortlisted for UK's Best Park.

Gheluvelt Park is the only Worcester location to be on the list - and now city people have been asked to get behind it and vote for it to win.

Andy Roberts, cabinet member for a clean, green and safe city, said: "If you live in Worcester, you are probably well aware of what a fantastic place the Gheluvelt Park is – so this is really an opportunity to gain some national recognition and to encourage more people to visit the city.

“This would be great news for local businesses, so I would urge you to vote for Gheluvelt Park today – and encourage all your friends, neighbours, relations and colleagues to do so too!”

Approximately 800,000 individual visits were made to Gheluvelt Park last year – and the popular tripadvisor.co.uk website currently lists the park as second on its list of Worcester’s top attractions.

The park received a £1.4m makeover in 2010 - thanks to a Heritage Lottery Fund award - paying for a specially commissioned war memorial feature, new play area, refurbished bandstand and splashpad.

The splashpad, which features jets, sprays and fountains which feed in to a central stream and pools, can attract up to 2,000 visitors to the park per day in the peak summer season.

The park has also played host to flower festivals and concerts among other events.

The public has until 5pm on Wednesday, November 25 to vote for it by visiting http://fieldsintrust.org/bestpark

The winner will be announced at the Fields in Trust Awards Ceremony at Lord's Cricket Ground on Wednesday, December 2.
