County braces itself for post office closures

FORTY to 50 sub post offices are expected to close in Worcestershire and Herefordshire by the end of next year as part of the Government's plan to slim-down the network.

And half of these will be in towns and cities if Worcestershire follows the national trend, says Peter Luff, Mid Worcestershire MP and chairman of the Trade and Industry Select Committee which has been monitoring the closure issue.

Ahead of an official announcement, Trade and Industry Secretary Alistair Darling told the BBC's Radio 4 programme: "I believe if we reduce the network by about 2,500 branches, backed by the £1.5 billion investment from Government, we can have a sustainable network."

But Mr Luff described the move as "managing decline".

"The Government has made up its mind and has all the powers it needs to do this. The Government is managing the decline of the Post Office.

"I do not think enough has been done to find a viable future for Post Offices. The Government has taken business away from the Post Offices to make them unviable and then blamed the Post Offices for being unviable.

"I think the Royal Mail has been very unenterprising in its approach. It has not looked at ways of sustaining the Post Office."

He said detailed plans would be drawn up for the post offices in each of 60 areas across the country and there would be a six-week consultation period when local authorities, organisations, businesses and members of the public could express their views.

"We will have six weeks to respond to their proposals but my committee has called for 12 weeks to make sure everyone has a chance to get involved."

He added apart from the compulsory closures there would be a large number of unplanned closures across the country.

A timetable of the process will be published in July and it will be completed, including all the closures, by the end of 2008.

County councillor Tom Wells, who spearheaded a campaign in his Powick ward opposing the closure idea, said the fight to save sub Post Offices would continue. He is urging the county's MPs to put their political differences aside and fight shoulder to shoulder to keep Post Offices open.

He said he would be tabling an emergency motion with the county council to demand the Government reconsider any closures.

"The Government has failed to recognise the vital role the Post Office plays in rural and urban communities. It is another nail in the coffin for village communities."

In many cases the closure of the local post office would jeopardise the long-term viability of the local shop and if local shops closed that would have serious implications for communities.

"The Government seems to know the price of everything and the value of nothing," he said.

Have just been reading these stories on the national news,i am sure the village post offices will mostly be closed now and soon. The new adapted big post office in town is not just going to be a part of WHSMITHS,nationwide the post offices are becoming whsmiths, not just sharing the floor space. So the replacement for all is whsmith who obviously have bought the business to save the governemnt from the massive losses in remote areas shops. They also said with driving licence,tv licence and passports being done online now even more need to close,as more losses.

Parliament is a of a waste of a building on a prime site and so is our Cathedral and then there`s the Guildhall.
Think of the money that could be saved if we flogged them all off, sacked all the staff and stole their pension fund!
Well,if working class people have to face this possibility I`m sure all those politicians, clergyme
n,lawyers and other professionals will expect to face the brave new capitalist world, just like everyone else! After all, they are always telling us to face the realities of global competition and nobody could accuse those fat cats of being competitive!

I reckon the Post Office closures are all down to global warming - it gets used as an excuse for everything else so why not this.

The disastrous impact of the latest round of Post Office closures on the rural communities affected has been well documented of late and appears to be obvious to everyone except the policy makers in the present government and Post Office Ltd.

However as the proprietors of a village store incorporating a full time Post Office certain implications of the closure threat are equally obvious to us but have maybe not received as much attention.

A very large proportion of rural Post Offices exist in tandem with the only “village shop” neither of these businesses being viable without the other. The village shop tends to be second only to the village pub as a place where local residents meet and socialise.
Close the Post Office and the shop also disappears.

Post Offices are widely used as a first point of reference for the local community in their dealings with local and national government, and utility providers.

Some of our customers would find it extremely difficult to adapt to life without the services we currently provide, particularly non-drivers. Public transport is not scheduled for casual shopping trips! Longer journeys to the nearest town, at a time when we are being “encouraged” to curb our use of fossil fuels – Joined up government? I don’t think so!

From a personal point of view, the uncertainty surrounding the future of all Post Offices is at best de-motivating and discourages us from continuing to develop our business. Not surprisingly we have no information that is not in the public domain.

The actions of Post Office Ltd and the government have for the last 9 months made our business worthless, the prospect of a further 18 months of uncertainty is intolerable.

We hope that we survive, for ourselves and our community but in common with 14,000 other Sub-Post Offices and their affected communities WE NEED TO KNOW!

The closure of our rural Post Offices will be a disaster to those of us living in out of the way areas.
We are about 4 miles from Malvern with no bus service at all. 10 miles from Ledbury and 6 miles from Worcester and just 5 buses a day. Our local Post Office is open through the week including all day on Saturday and provides such useful things as relicensing of cars. Having made everyone have their pensions paid into an account the government now close all the closest access points. Many rural post offices are interdependent on local shopping and very often if the Post Office closes so does the local shop.
Global warming!! They are sending us out in our cars etc using even more fuel and carbon emissions.
What idiot thought this one up?

Only rich people can live in the country now and the towns are increasingly disagreeable to live in.
I am beginning to think ordinary people of modest means are no longer wanted in Britain. It`s a sort of "cleansing" but not so much on ethnic as financial lines.
We are being replaced by cheap,no questions asked, labour from abroad and the rich elite, who buy up the houses our children cannot afford to live in.

at last they've followed my suggestion and banned post offices from public places. With these potential crime hot spots closed the streets will be a lot safer.

When are people going to realise that they will use their post offices if they dont use them a bit more! Its no good taxing your car online and then wondering what happened to your PO when you want to post a parcel!
