A KNITTING enthusiast had a pearler of an idea when she gathered together a weekly knitting group in Worcester almost a decade ago.

The United in Knitting group regularly has around a dozen people going along to its weekly session in the Pump House Eco Cafe, in Gheluvelt Park.

The group meets between 11am and 1pm each Saturday and enjoys a cuppa and a chat while doing their needlework, crocheting or knitting.

Group founder, Dawn Lewis said the group had been going for nine years and is very informal.

"We don't have a membership as such; people can just come along and enjoy the company. We do get around 15 people most weeks but it averages around 12. We hae regular socials and will be having a Christmas dinner this year.

"People bring along a piece of work they are making for themselves. One of the group is currently knitting a range of animals for a nativity scene. Occasionally we will make some items for charity. We've supported Acorns Children's Hospice in the past and knitted items for the premature babies unit at Worcester Royal Hospital. We have even knitted poppies for the past three years for the Poppy Appeal," she said.

Ms Lewis, originally from South Wales, said she started the group in memory of her nan, Clara Lewis, who also enjoyed knitting.
