BRITISH men are notorious for their reserve when it comes to discussing and dealing with health matters so a new campaign is encouraging them to take better care of themselves.
NHS South Worcestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is encouraging men to take care of themselves during the winter months and not ignore concerns about their health.
Healthy men will find the symptoms of a cold or flu during the winter bug season can be managed without seeing a doctor. Anyone with symptoms is advised to rest, drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and avoiding strenuous activity.
Local pharmacists can provide advice on the best medication to relieve aches and pains.
The CCG group say some some men need to take extra care as they're more at risk of serious chest complications, such as pneumonia and bronchitis.
Men over 65 are more at risk of complications, as well as anyone with underlying conditions such as diabetes, asthma or chronic heart disease.
If cold or flu symptoms continue for three weeks or more, it is advised to contact a GP practice for an appointment.
Dr Carl Ellson, chief clinical officer for NHS South Worcestershire CCG, said: “If you have an underlying health condition it’s important to take notice of what your body’s telling you.
“If you’re in an at risk group of further complications from flu, the best protection is to get the flu jab as soon as possible."
Anyone who needs urgent medical advice can call 111, the 24-hour line.
