GRITTING teams will be out on Worcestershire's roads this evening as clear skies could lead to icy roads.

Following a wet afternoon, with heavy showers crossing the county, temperatures are expected to drop below freezing.

The County council's gritting teams will be doing a precautionary grit run at 8.30pm, or after showers have cleared.

Drivers are reminded to take care when travelling across the county this evening and overnight as any further rain will wash salt off the roads. Highways teams will continue to monitor and react throughout the night with additional staff on standby.

Looking into the weekend, a yellow warning has been issued for strong winds across Saturday and Sunday. Additional highways staff will be on standby including two gulley emptiers, tree contractors and four gangs.

Cllr John Smith OBE, county council cabinet member for highways, said: "The crews will be doing their bit again tonight as road temperatures are expected to drop. But, as ever, we're urging people to take care and never to assume it's safe to travel at normal speeds when the elements pose challenges. It's just not worth the risk."
