THOUSANDS of shoppers defied bad weather and crowded into the centre of Worcester for the Victorian Christmas Fayre at the weekend.

The event, now in its 23rd year, saw traders turning back the clock by dressing up in Victorian costume to get into the festive spirit.

Over 200 stalls filled the atmospheric streets of Worcester’s historic heart with the colours, sounds and irresistible aromas of Christmas for this extra special time of year.

Following the opening ceremony on Thursday evening, when the mayor of Worcester, Roger Knight, led a procession of dignitaries from the Guildhall to the Cornmarket, the city enjoyed a long weekend of revelry and shopping.

From sparkly jewellery and festive home decorations to traditional roast chestnuts and warming mulled wine, a wonderful range of products were waiting to be discovered by eager shoppers.

Visitors embraced the Christmas spirit with the sounds of joyful choir and instrumental performances, viewed magical dance displays and travel back through time with juggling Victorian-themed stilt walkers.

A Victorian carousel whirled revellers around to the sounds of traditional barrel-organ music.

For the first time, the event was organised by LDS Promotions, which hosts markets and other events throughout the Midlands. Among the innovations introduced this year were the expansion of the event to include St Martin's Quarter, and more of the High Street, Broad Street and Bank Street.

Speaking yesterday, Dermot McGillicuddy of LSD Promotions said: "It's been really busy all weekend, and we've been lucky that the rain has held off. We had 70 coaches coming in this morning, and I think that's a record for a Sunday morning."

Posting of the fayre's Facebook page, Jean Barber said: "Awful weather but as always, a great atmosphere and good entertainment. Well done to Nunnery Wood School for getting us into the Christmas spirit with their lovely singing.

Dan Drysdale said: "Enjoyed the fair this year, very busy, and a bit rainy. Great atmosphere out in town, best way to get Christmas started. Very impressed with the pierogi stall."

Marilyn Allcock said: "Had a fab day walking around the market today. Thanks all. You all looked amazing in your Victorian outfits and the steam punk we saw walking about."

Teresa Griffiths said: "The rain can't stop us... Burger, hot dogs, spiced cider, mulled wine, cakes and merry go round later.... Lovely festive afternoon!!"

Tina Hundley Fowler said: "Had a wonderful time at the Victorian Christmas Fayre, much better this year with the stalls being in the High Street and the atmosphere was amazing."
