CHURCH bells in Hanbury will ring out in celebration of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal's 200th birthday.

St Mary's Church in the village will join three other churches from the area to perform a peel of bells along the length of the canal.

The bells will start ringing at St Nicholas' Church in Kings Norton from 10am to 11am, followed by St Laurence Church in Alvechurch, from midday until 12.30pm.

Hanbury will be next, ringing from 2.30pm to 3.30pm, before the relay finishes up at Worcester Cathedral, which will sound its bells from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.

The event has been organised by the Worcester-Birmingham and Droitwich Canals Society (WBDCS) in conjunction with Canal and River Trust (CRT).

To complement the day's bell ringing, The Shady Band will perform a live music concert in Diglis Basin, Worcester, along with a poem reading by Phil Clayton from 1pm.

The deputy mayor of Worcester, Councillor Mike Whitehouse, will cut an official cake baked especially for the celebrations.

Everyone is welcome to join in the festivities.
