AN INQUEST has been opened into the death of a pensioner who fell from Sabrina Bridge on Monday morning.

Robert Michael Sheridan, from Swinton Lane, Worcester, fell from the footbridge at around 10.40am and was rescued by emergency services near The Cathedral.

An inquest into the 78-year-old's death was opened today (Thursday) but a date for the final hearing has not yet been set.

Ambulance services managed to restart Mr Sheridan's heart after he was pulled from the water before he was taken for emergency treatment at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

However, his health deteriorated and he was declared dead at the hospital. His next of kin have been informed and police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Detective Sergeant Chris Percival said: "We were called at 10:41am today following concerns for the safety of a man who had entered the River Severn near to the Sabrina Bridge, Worcester.

"Fire and rescue attended the scene and launched boat to recover the man.

"He was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.

"His next of kin have been informed.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious."

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent an ambulance, a paramedic area support officer and paramedics from the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “The man, who had reportedly fallen from a bridge was pulled from the river into a boat.
