ITS' the end of an era for a much loved Malvern bar after its closure has been announced.

The doors have closed and time has been called for last on Olivers, affectionately known as Ollie's, after more than 20 years of service from its Belle Vue Terrace home.

Work is already underway on transforming the popular bar, which in its heyday would see hundreds of punters packed inside on Friday nights, into what is believed to be a restaurant.

Currently called 36 Belle Vue Terrace, the restaurant is understood to be aiming for a summer time opening.

In a statement on its Facebook page Olivers, which used to host Sunday night quizzes, the Superbowl, England football matches and live music events, confirmed the closure.

It says: "Olivers has closed for good.

"A new company has taken the premises over and will be reopening in the summer."

In the 1980s, the bar was known as Monroe's and was also well known as being a wine bar.

Many shocked readers have shared their dismay at the closure, on the Malvern Gazette's Facebook page, along with some of their memories of the Great Malvern bar.

Jennifer Dodd said: "I'm so shocked. I thought Ollie's would last forever. So many memories. My other half and I met in Ollie's over eight years ago."

Matty Barrett said: "What?! Best pub in town!"

Nicole Cokayne said: "So many more. I can't believe how sad I feel. Great bar and a great many more memories."

Kathy Holt said: "Best times ever. So many happy memories."

Russell Petty said: "Sad for town but sign of the times, great memories up there."

Steven James: "With Sarah Julie Mason, we had amazing memories there that I will treasure always."

One punter, and local musician Ruben Seabright, even proposed to his fiancée at Olivers after performing with his band on a New Year's Eve celebration night.

He said: "Very sad to hear that Ollie's has shut. Countless good memories there. Made a huge number of friends.

"Superbowl every February, playing New Year's Eve with my band and my wife agreed to marry me there."

The owner of Olivers was contacted but remained unavailable for comment.
