YOUNG GIRLS across Worcestershire will be discovering the fascinating journey behind the food on their plates thanks to an exciting new partnership between Girlguiding and Tesco.

The UK’s leading charity for girls and young women has teamed up with The Tesco Eat Happy Project – to offer girls across the UK a unique insight into food production, sustainability and healthy eating.

Rainbows (aged five to seven years) and Brownies (aged seven to 10 years) from Worcestershire will embark on a host of behind the scenes activities at Tesco stores to earn a very special Eat Happy badge.

Girls will be able to choose from a range of fun filled in store activities from identifying different types of fish to sampling a range of unusual fruits and learning about sustainability.

Over 43,000 Rainbows and Brownies aged five to 10 across the Midlands will have the opportunity to join in the fun and earn their Eat Happy badge in a supportive environment where they can ask questions and find out more about food choices.

Girlguiding Chief Guide Gill Slocombe said: “We’re really excited to be embarking on the Eat Happy project with Tesco. We encourage all girls in guiding to be curious about the world around them and these hands on activities will empower girls to explore the food journey and healthy eating in a fun and engaging way.”

The Tesco Eat Happy Project will support aspects of Girlguiding’s existing core programme – and girls will receive a free, fun badge for taking part.

Corporate responsibility director at Tesco Josh Hardie said: “Since its inception in 2014, The Tesco Eat Happy Project has reached over 1 million children across the UK, teaching them about the origins of the food they eat every day.

“At Tesco we are committed to helping young people live healthier lives by teaching them about the importance of a balanced diet as well as supporting UK farmers by highlighting the important role they play in getting food onto our plates.”

Girlguiding is the UK’s leading charity for girls and young women, giving all girls the opportunity to grow in confidence and discover their potential in a safe, girl-only space.

The charity offers a hugely varied programme including everything from international travel and advocacy to events such as girl-only pop concerts and festivals.

To find out more and organise a Farm to Fork trail for a Girlguiding unit, go to the nearest Tesco store and ask to speak to a trail guide.

They will help the girls to sniff, explore, squelch, touch, taste, make and discover more about where food comes from.
