ANXIOUS football fans in Worcester are urging council chiefs to stick with the Perdiswell plan - claiming "alternative sites" will not work.

This newspaper revealed on Saturday how council chiefs have suggested other possible sites to Worcester City FC officials for a new stadium instead of Perdiswell Park.

Although the city council has insisted it wants to keep it confidential, the Cinderella sports ground in St John's and the 'county sports' fields off Claines Lane were plots that were cited.

The club's supporter's trust wants the council to press on with processing the Perdiswell planning application - saying it does not have the money to now start considering other sites.

Since we revealed that stance, supporters of the club have come forward in droves to back that position - saying they believe it is too late to look elsewhere.

Fan Colin Williams, 41, who lives in Tewkesbury, contacted this newspaper to say "the time for talking has to stop".

He said: "This has been going on for so long and I find it incredible they (the council) are saying only now, two years after that planning application was put together, 'have you look at other sites'.

"Every supporter knows they've already looked at other sites, it's been done a long time ago."

Another Worcester City FC supporter, Paul Connelly, aged 50, of St John's, who has followed them since he was 10, said: "I've never known anything like it.

"It's time they either said yes or no to Perdiswell, it's been that long all the supporters just want to know where we stand.

"There is no other alternative, it doesn't exist."

Another fan who contacted this newspaper, emailing under the acronym 'City1', wrote: "When the trust first applied they looked across the whole of Worcester before ruling out all the other possible sites, in favour of Perdiswell.

"That's been very clear. What is still not clear is why it's taking so long for the council to sort this out one way or the other."

Writing on our website, a reader called FJW-Worcester wrote: "Just bring it to Perdiswell, which could then become a sporting centre for Worcester.

"And the park and ride site could be used as the club car park."

A poster called Like to Know said: "I hope these people don't get paid to come up with these suggestions.

"I've driven past the Cinderella site many times, there's four feet of scrubland with a set of goalposts sticking out at the top."

Also writing on our website, a reader called Provincial Vindicator said: "they could never build on Claines Lane anyway as County Sports wanted to install floodlights on there for years.

"Each time they were told planning permission would not be granted due to locals concerns about the light."

The council's Conservative leadership has insisted that getting Worcester City back home is one of its most pressing priorities.

While the club's fans are intent on backing Perdiswell a local campaign group has collected around 1,000 signatures from nearby residents calling for the trust to look elsewhere, as this newspaper first reported in 2014.

The planning application was submitted in April 2014 and has been mired in delays.
