STONEMASONS have been busy installing a memorial in Cripplegate Park, Worcester, ready for its unveiling at a special ceremony on Saturday afternoon.
As part of the Worcestershire World War One Hundred project, the memorial, which comprises a commemorative stone and a nine foot tall poppy sculpture by sculptor and mosaic artist Victoria Harrison, will mark the bravery and sacrifice of the 300 officers and men of the Worcestershire Yeomanry, who faced a 3,000 strong Turkish force at the adjoining battles of Qatia and Oghratina in the Egyptian desert during the First World War. The encounters took place in April, 1916 and resulted in virtually all the Yeomanry being killed, wounded or captured.
On Saturday morning there will be a service in Worcester Cathedral to mark the centenary of the battles with the memorial unveiled in the park at around 2.30pm with a military parade, wreath laying and addresses. Members of the public are being invited to attend, lay their own wreaths and pay their own tributes.
