A 22-year-old man from Worcester has been charged with allegedly driving a vehicle when above the legal alcohol level following a crash at CrownGate Shopping Centre in the early hours of this morning (Friday).

Shaun Alan Gordon, from Cartwright Avenue, was charged after a car crashed into a pillar at the Chapel Walk side of the CrownGate centre in Broad Street, at 4.30am.

The ambulance service confirmed one person was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital by ambulance with chest and arm injuries.

CrownGate Shopping Centre has boxed off the damaged pillar and has put a cordon in place while an investigation into the damage takes place.

The entrance is still in use, and the shopping centre is open as usual today.

A spokesperson from CrownGate Shopping Centre said: "We can confirm that at 4.33am the morning of the 29 April 2016 a vehicle made impact with one of the pillars at the entrance to the shopping centre on Broad Street.

"Emergency Services were in attendance.

"We are currently investigating the level of damage caused, however the shopping centre is open and trading as normal."

Mr Gordon will appear at Worcester Magistrates' Court on Friday, June 3, 2016.

Broad Street is a pedestrianised area between 10.30am and 4pm every day. Outside these times, vehicles are free to use the road.
