A BUS driver from Worcester has won £250,000 on a lottery scratchcard.

The man, who works for First Worcester, bought the £2 scratchcard from Devereux's News in the CrownGate Shopping Centre, near Worcester bus station, at around 11am yesterday morning.

Sue Smith, who sold him the £250,000 ticket, said he was "shaking" when he handed her back the ticket to double check if he was a winner.

After scanning the ticket, a message popped up on the newsagent's screen instructing the man to contact Camelot immediately.

She said: "He came in and won some money on the Euro. He said, 'I will have two £2 cards today'.

"He left the shop and came back in and asked me to check it. He was shaking.

"He is a lovely bloke. It has gone to a lovely man. I am glad he has won it."

The winner is a regular customer at Devereux's News and comes in every day.

Neil Devereux, who runs the newsagents, said: "He came in and bought the scratch card. He looked a little bit dumbfounded. He handed it over and said am I seeing things?

"He was pretty speechless, he didn't say much. I think he was in shock.

"It is just amazing, obviously really pleased for him."

Mr Devereux, who was alone with Ms Smith at the time of the win, said he had never had anyone win such an enormous amount of money in his shop before.

He said: "Normally, the biggest I think I have seen on a scratchcard was £100!"

While the winner wishes to remain anonymous, a spokesperson for First Worcester confirmed he lives in Worcester and has worked for the company for 16 years.

Sarah East, general manager for First Worcester, said: "We heard this morning that one of our drivers had been successful in winning on a lottery scratchcard.

"I, along with all colleagues at First Worcester would like to send our congratulations and wish him all the very best."
