A WIDOWER imagined his late wife laughing down at him from heaven as he completed a bizarre and brilliant charity challenge in her memory.

Forget the stories about 'little green men' - there is only one big-hearted green man in Worcester and there is nothing remotely little about his big-hearted fundraiser in memory of his fun and feisty late wife.

Ron Chambers dyed his hair, beard and eyebrows bright green before having half his hair shaved off to raise money for St Richard's Hospice, the charity which became so dear to him because of the support given to his wife as she battled cancer.

The 69-year-old of St George's Walk, Barbourne, Worcester completed the challenge on Saturday in memory of Judith.

Judith, known as Judy to her friends, died of cancer at the age of 72 in November 2014.

During her life she received excellent care at the hospice in Wildwood Drive for which Mr Chambers said he would always be grateful.

So far he has raised £200 for St Richard's but not all the sponsorship money has come in yet and he hopes Worcester News readers will get behind him and boost his total.

Mr Chambers says he has received strong support from people in the community with drivers sounding their car horns to show their approval.

He said: "I can see it causing a car accident in Worcester when they see the 'green man'.

"It was a bit of a shock when I looked in the mirror. Judy would have been made-up about what I'm doing. I think she would really appreciate it.

"I was a bit nervous on Saturday morning. I felt I could hear Judy laughing on Saturday. She would have loved it."

Mr Chambers wanted to give thanks to Trisha Carrey of Clip Joint in New Street, Worcester who performed the head shave and to Stuart Thompson who helped with sandwiches and in organising a tombola on the day of the shave.

He plans to keep his outlandish new look for at least a week.
