TOP grades have been recorded for the first results received at a new sixth form in Worcester.

Two pupils from Christopher Whitehead Language College have received A grades in dance.

Cleo Haden and Aaron Duffet were given the marks for their practical work, which will make up 60 per cent of their final mark.

The pair were among 60 sixth form students who started at the first year 12 at the Bromwich Road school in September.

Headteacher Neil Morris said: "Our first two A level results are A grades.

"We are delighted.

"Our dance is stunning.

"We've got some amazing dancers here."

He added: "Of the 60 students who started we still have 59.

"They came from six different institutions.

"Next year we are taking 100 at least.

"We've already had 121 applications from nine different schools."

Mr Morris said the school had changed in the six months since it had added the sixth form.

He said: "What we've seen is we are evolving into an 11-18 school and having ten new teachers with the academic rigour of teaching A levels has upped everybody's game.

"The students are a very bright cohort and they are making a big impact on our school.

"Everything is new and exciting.

"It's quite invigorating."

More changes are planned at the school which is in the middle of a consultation on expanding the number of students it teaches from 224 to 254 pupils in years 7-11.

As we previously reported, Worcestershire County Council has asked some high schools to Worcester to expand to meet a growing demand for secondary school places.

The school is also currently undergoing a £4.1 million building programme to create a state of the art sixth form centre and ten extra classrooms.

Mr Morris said he felt the St John's school should be prouder of its achievements.

He said: "More than 14 per cent of students achieved A* or A grades, we are in the top five per cent for all schools nationally for adding value for English and the top 15 per cent for adding value for eight subjects.

"Sometimes I think we underestimate ourselves."
