A GROUP of travellers who set up camp on Worcester's Pitchcroft car park yesterday, have moved onto the Croft Road car park overnight.

The Worcester News reported on the group setting up camp next to the Swan Theatre yesterday, and the city council's legal department began action to move them on.

This morning the group, understood to be French travellers who have visited Worcester in previous years, had left that site but moved their six caravans and vehicles onto the nearby car park, which is also owned by the authority.

The council served a notice on the travellers, and the council's legal team are at county court this morning.

The car park space is much needed this weekend with visitors coming into the city for the planned activities celebrating The Queen's 90th birthday.

A Worcester News reporter approached the group for a comment earlier today, but they again did not wish to speak.

The section of Pitchcroft car park where the travellers initially set up camp has been left clean and tidy - just a few pieces of wood look to have been left on the side of the car park.

• A spokesman for Worcester City Council has said that they were not able to pursue the legal action for their original notice today, due to the group switching location overnight.

Council officials have also been told by the group that they intend to be at the site until next week.

Here is the authority's statement in full:

"It was not possible for us to pursue a claim over the unauthorised occupation of Croft Road in court today, as the notices served the day before related to Pitchcroft car park.

"The council has served fresh notices on the travellers over their occupation of Croft Road car park this afternoon.

"We will be managing the occupation of the council’s land over the weekend and the area will be closely monitored during the events to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday on Saturday.

"The welfare of the travellers will also continue to be monitored.

"The travellers have informed us that they intend to remain in the city into next week.

"We will review the situation on Monday morning and take further action if they are still occupying any of the council’s land."

The spokesman said that they are still encouraging people to come into the city and park for free on the Croft Road car park to enjoy tomorrow's events including the Flotilla.

The spokesman added that the presence of the travellers should have "very little difference" to the overall availability of spaces, particularly as free parking is also available on the Pitchcroft and Cattle Market car parks.
