A sudden deluge of rain caused flooding across Worcester today.

The heavy rain is set to continue tomorrow with thundery showers and rainfall forecast to reach 15-25 mm within the space of an hour.

Two manhole covers were pushed up by the water on Tybridge Street, and the road and its adjoining car park were submerged.

Aimee Hewett was caught up in flooding problems in Tolladine.

She said: "When the rain was coming down the drains were pumping it straight back out at the bottom of Tolladine Road.

"Cars were speeding creating waves that soaked me and my three-year-old girl on the way to her first ballet class."

Drivers were urged to be cautious due to surface flooding on roads.

Dave Harford, co-ordinator for Worcester for the West Midlands Ambulance Service, said Hylton Road, New Road and Tybridge Street as being particularly bad.

New Road was partially flooded and traffic flow was down to one lane at one point.

It had returned to normal by late yesterday afternoon.

Water was about 18 inches deep in the car park at Tybridge Street, Worcester.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for Worcestershire, which means to plan ahead and check the weather forecast.

Worcestershire Highways put in more measures to combat the poor weather.

These included six more highways gangs, three gully-emptiers and tree contractors on standby.

Cllr Marcus Hart, cabinet member with responsibility for highways said: "As always in such conditions, we are putting special measures in place to ensure road safety.

"With such a high volume of rainfall, road surfaces may be affected by standing water and localised flooding, and we would urge all road users to take extra care."

Dave Throup environment agency manager in Hereford and Worcester said: "We would urge people to drive with extreme care this evening and tomorrow.

"There is a lot of standing water around and visibility is reduced considerably."
