THE year is 1976 and there's a bit of a dingdong going on at Worcester's Warndon council estate where ten tenants are threatening to withhold their rent until a playground is removed.

It had originally been built for young children, who are seen playing in this photograph, but in the evening had become a meeting place for groups of up to 50 youths who cause a disturbance.

According to residents the youths throw stones at people and buildings, peer into groundfloor bedroom windows, turn footpaths into cycle race tracks and make love on playground benches, which was not what they were designed for.

Tom Turford, aged 73 of Brookthorpe Close, said: "Somebody will get killed around here."

Although he was no more specific than that.

Area councillor George Randall said it was ironic that after so much time spent lobbying for play areas, people now wanted them taken away.

Deputy city housing director Bill Richardson added: "If there are any problems they will have to be ironed out."
