THE role of volunteers was celebrated in Pershore with a special balloon release.

A dedicated team of 70 based at Pershore Volunteer Centre, in Billing House, attended a celebratory week in early June, which coincided with national volunteer week.

Among the volunteers were minibus drivers, transport coordinators, receptionists, community car drivers, administrators and minibus escorts and at the start of the event volunteers wrote their roles on a balloon, before they were released.

The Pershore centre helps recruit volunteers for a range of roles, for 53 charities across Pershore, Evesham and Worcester.

The event was also a farewell party for Jeanette Dowling who, for 17 years, has been in charge of community transport, minibuses and a social club for older people.

Mrs Dowling has become a familiar face in Pershore with husband Chris, actively involved in fundraising and other events.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can find out more about the opportunities available by contacting the Pershore Volunteer Centre on 01386 554299 or visiting the centre at 1 Billing House, Pershore.

The centre is open 10am to 4pm, Monday to Thursdays, and 10am to 1pm on Fridays.
