GREENMAN star Rich Brewer came out on top of a fantastic bream-dominated Droitwich Spa open contest held on the River Avon at Twyning.

Brewer triumphed by the narrowest of margins, topping the field by just 14 ounces.

With bream feeding in all areas, it was obvious that the match was going to be decided between Brewer on peg 3 and Alan Baldwin on peg 5.

Both anglers used open end feeder tactics and were matching each other fish-for-fish throughout the contest.

However, it was Brewer who got the verdict, weighing in 90lbs 14oz to Baldwin’s level 90lbs net.

Some way back in third place was Alf Hand, who put a mainly skimmer bream weight of 51-0-0 onto the scales..

Section prizes went to Chris Ballard, whose haul weighed 25-8-0, and John Halfpenny, 20-4-0.

Former Worcester national angler Les Sanders easily won the Swan AC contest on the canal at Whitford Bridge.

Sanders easily put 7-8-3 onto the scales, which consisted of bream, roach and perch taken on bread and worm.

Second place was secured by Mike Higginbotham, who bagged 4-13-2, while third went to Rich Brewer’s 4-5-9 catch.

Section winners were Len Merrill, Tim Biddle and John Moloney.

Meanwhile, Graham Mitchenall won the latest Halfway House contest at Church Farm.

He took 84-8-0 of carp from peg 20 on pellet and paste.

Runner-up was Nick Wilson with a peg 11 method feeder which yielded 46-14-0 and third spot went to Pete Jones, who weighed in with 22-10-0.

Steve Williams was declared this year’s singles champion when he beat Mick Watling to the title.
