A FAULT with an underground electricity cable caused an explosion underneath a car park in Pershore.

Just after midday, firefighters from Pershore were called to the scene in Station Road, along with officers from Western Power Distribution (WPD).

Workers in nearby buildings were evacuated and the area was cordoned off while fire officers and engineers got to work.

A spokesman for WPD said: "There was a fault on a low voltage underground cable in the area.

"It is not supplying any customers so nobody's electricity supply has been affected, but it has been isolated and engineers are carrying out repairs."

Engineers are currently at the scene working to repair the fault.

A spokesperson for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) said it was not known how much damage the explosion had caused.

It initially reported that a suspected gas leak had caused the explosion.

HWFRS, which sent one engine from Pershore, left the incident with engineers.
