BROMSGROVE District Council has warned residents that they will no longer be able to claim Housing Benefit if they travel abroad for more than four weeks in a row.

The change is coming in under new rules issued by the Government, which reduces the time from the previous 13 weeks, people were allowed to claim during what is known as a ‘temporary absence’.

Residents are being warned that if they are going away for more than four weeks, they should contact the district council in advance and let them know, to avoid the possibility they might accidentally claim benefits they aren’t entitled to, which could potentially see them charged with committing benefit fraud.

In some special circumstances the four week time limit can be extended, but it will have to be decided on a case by case basis, so people are advised to discuss their claim before making any travel plans.

Amanda Singleton, head of customer access and financial support at Bromsgrove District Council, said: “We want to make sure our customers know about this national change. If you’re going to be out of the country for more than four weeks, just be sure to talk to us before you go. That way you will avoid any problems with Housing Benefit payments further down the line.”

People planning on going abroad can notify the district council at bromsgrove.gov.uk/benefits, by calling 01527 881213, or in person at Parkside.
