TWO hundred cyclists - of all abilities - are needed to join Acorns Children's Charity for the Severn Valley Cycle Challenge on Saturday, August 21.

Starting in Bridgnorth, cyclists have the choice of a 40 mile or 20 mile route featuring scenic hill climbs and spectacular views.

Both races end in Bewdley where riders will have the option to enjoy a leisurely trip back on the Severn Valley Railway.

Mandie Fitzgerald, community fundraising manager at Acorns for the Three Counties, Bath Road, explained why the charity had 200 sign-ups in its sights.

She said: “If we hit this number of sign-ups and each person raises £133 each in sponsorship, this equates to enough money to fund the role of a specialist Acorns Sibling Worker for a year.

“Sibling work is a vitally important part of the care we provide.

"Through a diverse range of support groups and activities, the team at Acorns enables siblings to adjust to being part of a family with a life limited brother or sister, gain a sense of belonging and encourage an increase in confidence and self-esteem.”

“This event is ideal for cyclists who want to tackle one of the region’s most scenic routes with a world famous train journey finish.

"We’re offering routes that will appeal to everyone so even if you’re new to cycling or are just looking for a great day out it’s the perfect time to get on your bike and at the same time, make a real difference.”

“We rely on fundraising and events like this for the majority of the nearly £10 million it costs to continue providing our care, so whatever your ability, we’re really hoping local people harness their pedal power for a good cause."

Acorns provides a range of specialist palliative care to children and young people and support for their families. In the past year Acorns has provided care to more than 800 children and over 1,030 families, including those who are bereaved.

Entry price to the Severn Valley Cycle Challenge varies depending on route and optional train journey. All cyclists who take part will receive a free t-shirt and finish-line medal.
