MORE than 400 children from a Worcester school enjoyed Olympic-themed activities based on the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Pupils from St. Barnabas CE Primary School were split into 14 mixed-age classes and allocated countries which they represented at opening and closing ceremonies for the Rio Olympic world week.

The children were given a coloured t-shirt which they wore each day to foster pride in their country and enhance their teamwork skills.

During the week they tried out a series of workshops including Brazilian Samba Drumming, enjoyed a Britain to Brazil Dance workshop delivered by West End in Schools, along with a Scooter workshop, South American Futsal Football and took part in a Water Polo Aquatics Festival.

The children also visited Worcestershire County Council's Earth Balloon and were able to learn artistic skills from an artist-in-residence from Worcester Arts Resource Exchange.

An Olympics inspired sports day was held with medals awarded to the children at the end of the week.

Great Britain finished in third place, Greece was second while France won.

The week was organised by headteacher Sarah Hanson and sports teacher Chris Jenkinson, with support from other teachers and the Friends of St. Barnabas Association.

The Friends also organised a Fun on the Field picnic celebration to coincide with the closing ceremony.

Chris Jenkinson said: "All of the children had a really enjoyable and engaging week learning an enormous amount about the culture, history and geography of different countries, whilst having a lot of fun in the process too."

The week took place between Monday, July 11 and Friday, July 15.
