A MAN was rescued from a river in Pershore last night (Tuesday).

The man, believed to be in his 30s had fallen into the river near to Pershore Bridge and the ambulance service received a call just before 8.15pm.

He was treated by ambulance staff for an ankle injury and a slightly reduced level of consciousness before being transported to Worcester Royal Hospital.

An ambulance, a rapid response paramedic, a paramedic area support officer and a MERIT trauma doctor were sent to the scene.

The police, fire service and the fire service river rescue were also in attendance.

Eyewitness, Bob Richards said: "We were just driving through the B4084 from Evesham to Pershore, when we saw a policeman directing traffic to turn left.

"We could see 4 or 5 police cars up ahead but I thought nothing of it until a man went past, and the policeman directing and 2 policemen sprinted after him.

"A man and a woman not from the police service also ran towards the river and looked very concerned.

"Then when we drove out of Pershore all hell broke loose, we saw a fire engine, a fast response ambulance an ambulance, and an unmarked police car as well as the fire service river rescue."

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find a man, believed to be in his 30s, who had been rescued from the water.

“He was treated by ambulance staff for an ankle injury and a slightly reduced level of consciousness before being transported to Worcester Royal Hospital."

A spokesman for the West Mercia Police said: "Police were called to concerns for the safety of a vulnerable man on the River Bridge on Bridge Street, Pershore shortly after 8pm last night.

"Officers attended and engaged with the man, who then entered the water."

"The fire service helped the man to safety and he was treated by ambulance services for potential hypothermia and taken to hospital."

The road (B4084) was reopened as of 9pm.
