PUPILS from a science, technology, engineering and maths club at a Worcester school have toured a local factory.

Students from Tudor Grange Academy Worcester went to Worcester Bosch to take part in a build challenge.

The pupils from years 7 and 8 spent the morning seeing how the company’s award-winning Greenstar gas boilers are made, before breaking into small groups to take on the task of creating a Worcester trophy, using only a combination of plastic, metal, rivets and screws available to them.

Worcester’s expert engineers were also on hand to help guide the students through the challenge, and to answer questions on the work that goes into the design, development, testing and final build of a boiler.

Victoria Tyler, science teacher, said: "We really wanted to introduce pupils to the engineering side of STEM and the many varied career opportunities that exist in this sector.

"Obviously, this is difficult to do in a classroom environment, so being able to visit and speak to people from Worcester who are involved is invaluable.

“The pupils from the STEM Club had a fantastic time touring the factory and experiencing the types of skills this sector encompasses for themselves.

"Being able to take part in a challenge of their own was a great deal of fun too.

"It bought the subject to life for the students and certainly left a positive and lasting impression with all involved.”

Carl Arntzen, CEO at Worcester, Bosch Group, added: “It is always a delight to welcome students to the Worcester factory and will hopefully help inspire the next generation of engineers.

"The visit was enjoyed by all involved and we hope that seeing the variety of options open to them has encouraged the students to continue to explore this area, and consider the opportunities available to them for the future.”
