MORE tributes have been paid to a man who pulled his mother and dog to safety before dying when his narrowboat sank in a Droitwich canal lock.

Allen Green, 49, died when his narrowboat got into difficulty an sank in Lock 5 of the Droitwich Junction Canal on Monday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but, despite resuscitation efforts, Mr Green was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gail Evans, who knew Mr Green and his mother Jean, described him as a "character".

Writing on the Worcester News Facebook page she said: "He made us stuff for the boat like doors and even had a plate done for us painted with our names on,sadly bloody missed he will be!

"Went shopping, doctors etc with his mom,too many things to mention in writing, just that can't believe he's gone so sad!"

Also posting on Facebook, Rebwar Said commented: "So sad. Bless this man. Rip"

An investigation is underway to understand what caused the incident, and West Mercia Police has confirmed it is not treating the death as suspicious.

The Canal and River Trust (CRT), which is responsible for the county's waterways, said it had conducted a structural inspection of the lock yesterday (Tuesday) and found "no problem".

A CRT spokesman said: "As far as we can tell there is no problem with the lock so the canal is now open and operational again.

"At the moment, it does just seem like a tragic accident that has happened and certainly not something that is connected explicitly to the structures.

"We would offer to support any further investigation in that sense."
