WORCESTER'S new £10.5 million swimming pool is going from strength to strength - and now a video has been released showing the huge project off.

Worcester City Council has put together a new time-lapse video following the construction of the new sports centre, from the diggers arriving to the walls being installed.

The thrilling insight into the eight-lane pool, set to open at Perdiswell Leisure Centre early next year, has been hailed by the city's swimming club.

It comes at a time when the sport is in the spotlight with team GB scooping a string of meals in Rio.

Worcester Swimming Club chairman Simon Richards said: "It’s fantastic to see Worcester’s new swimming pool starting to become a reality.

"Team GB has already won several swimming medals at Rio with hopefully more to come.

"It’s amazing to think that Worcester could play a big part in future Olympic success with the new pool helping to train the medal-winners of tomorrow."

The new pool has been taking shape since November and is the centrepiece of a major extension and refurbishment of Perdiswell Leisure Centre, creating a competition-standard facility to attract visitors from across the UK.

The eight-lane pool will measure a whopping 25 metres by 18 metres and will also boast poolside seating for 250 spectators.

Major progress is being made on the project, with concrete now being poured into the main pool to create its water-tight floor and walls.

The learner pool has already reached the stage where it has been filled up to test it is water-tight.

Meanwhile, council bosses say the refurbishment of the leisure centre’s sports hall is progressing well and is on schedule to re-open on September 5.

The funds for the scheme are coming from a mixture of sources includes a £2 million Sport England grant, a contribution from the Heart of Worcestershire College, cash from the sale of the council's old Orchard House HQ and borrowing.

The pool at Sansome Walk will be demolished once the new site opens.
