YOUNG gun Colby Bishop says he is hoping for more opportunities to play alongside his “role model” Lee Hughes at Worcester City.

The duo have scored all five of City’s goals this season and Bishop believes they can form a potent strike force in Vanarama National League North.

Since joining the Blue and Whites this month, the 19-year-old says he has relished the chance to pick the brains of the former Premier League striker.

The Nottingham-based player became a great admirer of Hughes’ goal-scoring talents and the way he “handled himself” on the pitch during his spell at Notts County from 2009 until 2013.

And, having spent time with him at City, Bishop insists the 40-year-old, who joined Coventry City for £5million from West Bromwich Albion in 2001, could not be any different to his “hard nut” image.

“My dad is a big Notts County fan so he always used to drag me to the matches and when Lee was playing he was scoring goals for fun,” Bishop said.

“I like to think I play like him. We have not got the same body frame but we have the same style, so he is definitely someone I look up to. He is a good role model.

“Because of the way he finishes and handles himself, he can be a bit of a handful.

“He is a hard nut on the pitch but he is the nicest guy off it and I think I can learn a lot off him.”

With Hughes banned for City’s home clash against Chorley on Saturday and their visit to Stockport County on Monday (both 3pm), Bishop is set to lead the line.

The former Notts County youngster has so far taken his opportunity having struck twice in the last two games, including the equaliser in Worcester’s 1-1 draw against FC United of Manchester.

But Bishop reckons he and Hughes could create a good partnership having both netted late on in Worcester’s 3-2 defeat to Gloucester City last Tuesday.

“I really enjoyed playing up front with him,” he said.

“Even though we are similar players, I think we can play well together like we showed when he came on against Gloucester, so hopefully we can both play and score goals.”

Bishop, who made four senior appearances for County before being released at the end of last season, added: “I did not really enjoy it last season but I am enjoying my football again and relishing playing.

“I want to take my opportunity with both hands, score some goals and cement myself in the team.

“I tend to set benchmarks for myself, so I want to get to double figures first, see how long that takes and if it is early enough, hopefully push on and get 20 goals.”
