A YOUNG person's leisure club in Worcester has been celebrating its 40th anniversary with a family fun day.

Thousands attended the event at Perdiswell Young People's Leisure Club, in Perdiswell Park, Droitwich Road, on Thursday, August 18.

Perdiswell Young People's Leisure Club is an independent, charitable organisation, aiming to help and educate young people in Worcester, particularly those disadvantaged or disabled.

The club was formed in 1976, and for many years scores of young people met in an old wartime hut.

After the club gained charitable status in 1986, funds raised enabled the club to move to a new building which opened in 1989.

Further fundraising enabled a much needed extension to be built in 1994, and another in 2000, while in 2005 young people were able to enjoy a newly built skate park and youth lodge.

As the facilities are also used by other young people’s groups, to hold their activities and training events, they were invited along to the fun day and also provided free activities.

Among the groups who got involved were Worcester Play Council, Disability Sport Worcester, Fortis Living and Action for Children.

Phil Weston, development manager at the club, said: "There were pony rides face painting, snakes and animals, fire, police and St Johns ambulance, 11 inflatable castles, a big wheel, six large fun fair rides, a climbing wall, a free side stall, hook a duck and coconut stall, badge making, arts and craft workshops and pottery.

"Free transport was provided for children and families to attend from Dines Green, Ronkswood, Horizon, KGV, Warndon and Tolladine."
