IT has been announced this evening that the current carnival boss has stepped down.

Taking over with a "bold plan" to rescue next year's carnival will be councillor Alan Feeney who has experience as an event manager.

The statement said the previous carnival chief has resigned - though does not name chairman Mal Hobbs specifically.

The 34-year-old from Warndon Villages said he was devastated when he heard the Wednesday's news.

“It was absolutely heartbreaking.

"Last year had its challenges from what I heard and there was so much optimism about 2016. It’s such a shame.”

Cllr Feeney has confirmed that he will be taking on the newly-created role of carnival president and will serve as principal organiser following the resignation of the previous carnival chief.

Although not a city council event, cllr Feeney also praised the work of council officers and locals who have strived to deliver this year’s parade.

Following the shock announcement blaming "operational circumstances" for the cancellation, emergency talks took place between cllr Feeney and the 2016 carnival organisers aimed at what could be done to save the event.

Sadly it proved impossible.

One carnival spokesman said: “It has been an agonising decision and everyone fought to the last possible minute to try and overcome the problems. Cllr Feeney coming on board is great news and we are thrilled because of his vast experience in organising events.”

Cllr Feeney, who is well known in the city and was elected to the council in May 2015, has more than 15 years experience in arranging all types of events, from small gatherings to large outdoor festivals.

He was master of ceremonies for the Queen’s visit to the guildhall in 2012, he has founded and chairs the city’s Elgar Festival as well as providing the main funding that has saved the much-loved Brickfields fireworks.

He has spoken about how he is confident that the carnival can be great once more, but needs support.

“There is clear support for a carnival to exist and I call upon everyone to use that energy around for the good, to come on board and help the carnival move forward.

"I am desperate for carnival to succeed but we cannot do it alone; I need local people and businesses to come with us.

"Worcester and its residents deserve an event to be proud of.

"I have already identified a theme for next year which will give every part of the community a chance to be involved.

"There will also be a launch event soon to explain this theme and to secure sponsorship.”

Cllr Feeney, putting himself firmly at the helm said. “I have made my involvement very public so that people know who to come to about next year, but I cannot change the past or speak with authority on events I was not a part of.

"I am looking at ways that those who missed out this year can have the best possible experience next year. This is the turning point and 2017 will be amazing with everyone’s support.”
