A FIVE-car motorway crash caused misery for drivers in Worcestershire hoping to make a Bank Holiday weekend getaway.

Nobody was injured in the pile-up yesterday on the northbound carriageway in the roadworks section of the M5 between junction five (Droitwich) and junction 4A (M42) just before midday.

The crash closed off two lanes of the carriageway and a large amount of fuel was spilled which needed to be cleaned up before the lanes could reopen.

Traffic trailed as far back as junction 11, the exit for Cheltenham and Gloucester, as holidaymakers were caught up in delays of more than 90 minutes.

Roads in Worcester, Droitwich and Bromsgrove felt the effects of the crash with reports of heavy congestion both ways on the A38, A4538 Pershore Lane at Martin Hussingtree and Rashwood.

Lukas Vaičiulis was one of those who was caught up in the queues.

He said he had joined the M5 at junction six just after 12 and by about 1.40pm he had not even reached junction five.

CJH wrote on the Worcester News Facebook page: "Is it my imagination, but has there been a day recently when there hasn't been an accident on the M5 which has caused delays and chaos?"

The lanes were reopened just before 2pm but Highways England said severe delays remained, and traffic did not return to normal until around 3.30pm.

Highways England also tweeted about further delays on the southbound carriage in the afternoon, between junctions five and six (Worcester North), caused by motorists slowing to looking over to the incident on the other carriageway.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said they were called at 11.29am to reports of a four car crash.

"We had a paramedic support officer who arrived first at the scene and found it was a five vehicle road traffic collision.

"However, he found there were no injuries.

"The rest of our resources on the way to the scene were stood down."
