A CHARITY run in memory of a Worcester student killed in a terror attack in Tunisia has already drawn more than 500 entrants.

The fundraising run has been set up in memory of former University of Worcester student Joel Richards and is set to take place close to what would have been his 21st birthday.

Sandwell Leisure Trust in partnership with the Smile for Joel charity (set up by mum Suzy Richards and younger brother Owen) and Victim Support are hosting the first ‘Run for Joel’ event on Sunday, September 11 at Sandwell Valley Country Park, West Bromwich.

Organisers are aiming for 1,000 people from across the region to take part.

It starts at 10am with a competitive 5K run, but there is also a more relaxed 3K run (or even a stroll) open to all ages and abilities.

Joel was just 19 years of age when he lost his life in Tunisia on June 26 last year along with Grandfather Patrick Evans, 78, and uncle Adrian Evans, 49.

Suzy Richards, aged 47, said: “We’re primarily doing it to honour Joel's 21st birthday (he would have turned 21 earlier this month on August 3) and this fun run is the first of our ‘21 Challenges for Joel’ initiative.

"Everyone knows Joel would have been at the front of the queue to sign up and participate, so my message to people across the region is let's stand together as one and show our love for 31 British people that never came home from holiday.”
