A COMPANY director who launched an “ugly”, unprovoked attack on a group of Slovakian men in a Worcestershire pub – smashing a glass over the head of one of them – has been jailed for eight months.

CCTV footage played to Worcester Crown Court showed Michael Cheesbrough, aged 29, who is director of an off-licence, walking through the door at the Wharf Inn, Holt Fleet, and hitting a man sitting nearby, while holding a bottle of beer in one hand.

Cheesbrough, of Addison Road, Wednesbury, West Midlands, who admitted affray, then picked up a glass of beer and smashed it over someone’s head – and later lifted a table to hit another man.

Scott Coughtrie, prosecuting, said the victims in the attack were Radoslav Revaj, Milan Sekan and Renee Janek, who were Slovakian.

He added that Mr Revaj suffered cuts and scratches to his face and lumps to his head, while Mr Sekan was left with a swollen and cut lip and chest pains.

Mr Janek had a small cut to his ear in the incident, which happened at 1.20am on November 8.

Mr Coughtrie said it had been an “unprovoked” attack, which included use of a table, a glass and hitting someone from behind.

Graham Russell, defending, told Judge Pearce-Higgins QC, that the CCTV footage painted an “unflattering picture” of Cheesborough but it followed him being told that his girlfriend of 11 years had been assaulted by someone.

“It was ugly,” he added.

Cheesbrough, a father-of-two who employed four members of staff, was well thought of by those who knew him and had shown “genuine contrition” for the incident.
