A LOCAL fire station opened its doors to the public to show the work their firefighters do.

Worcester Fire Station held an open day on Saturday between 11am and 4pm to show visitors how a firefighter does his job.

A number of demonstrations took place throughout the day, including how to cut a person out of a car and how to stop chip pan fires.

Phil Berry, the station commander said: "The reason we hold open days is to engage with people and to educate the community about fire safety.

"We want to show people how we do our work so that they can get a bit more of an understanding how it works.

"Several demonstrations are taking place including how we would react to an RTC.

"We have always had great turnouts at the open days and this year is no different, we would like to thank everyone for coming along despite the weather not being great."

The open day was just the second held at the new Mckenzie Way facility which opened just over 12 months ago.

Mr Berry said: "It is nice to be able to show the public the new facility, as this is only the second open day we have had since it opened a lot of people won't have seen it."

As well as the serious stuff, a chance to ride in the back of a fire engine was available at £2 each, whilst children also had the opportunity to sit in police and ambulance cars.

A children's roundabout and slide was also available on the day as well as a bouncy castle and facepainting.

A BBQ was going throughout the day, along with an ice cream van and a number of different stalls.

The day was also raising money for the Firefighters Charity that helps serving and retired firefighters and was also raising funds for Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Droitwich Young Firefighters were in attendance throughout the day doing demonstrations.

They have an opening evening on Wednesday October 19 from 7pm at Droitwich Fire Station on Friar Street.
