THE living dead will rise once again to take over the streets of Worcester - but all in the name of charity.

Scores of the undead will be taking part in the Worcester Zombie Walk on Sunday, October 23 to stalk though the city centre in aid of CLIC sergeant.

Organisers have reiterated to people wishing to take part that it is a fun, family friendly event and the focus is on zombies and not "killer clowns" - a nasty prank sweeping the US and now the UK.

Tracey Monaghan, whose husband Andy founded the Worcester event, said it was about having fun.

"It's not about scaring people.

"We all stay in a group and walk together and we're hoping to try and get someone walking in front ringing a bell so people know we're coming and can pop into a shop while we pass if they wish.

"We have all different ages taking part, we've had a baby in a pram and children come along now - it is definitely a family event.

"I have heard about killer clown but I haven't really read about it but we don't really have clowns involved because we are a zombie walk.

"We definitely do not want anything like that to be part of the walk."

Worcester Zombie Walk began about ten years ago and usually gets more than 100 people taking part.

Afterwards, they enjoy a jelly brain eating competition and a zombola at The Crown in Broad Street.

She added: "We have people who want to come back each year and as soon as one walk is over they are asking when next year's will take place.

"We get a really positive response and we try to keep it so it has a minimum effect on other people who are not into it which is fair enough - it's not everyone's cup of tea.

"We're not there to cause offence it is just a fun way for horror fans to raise money for charity and have fun.

"It's definitely not meant in bad taste."

After being made over, the zombies will leave The Crown at midday, walk to the Elgar Statue along The Shambles and return to the pub.

It costs £1 to take part, under 12s free, and for more information search for the event on Facebook or visit Worcester War Games, Trinity Street.

Organisers are hoping to hear from make up artists who can volunteer to help create zombies from 10am at The Crown.
