IT is becoming as popular as the ice bucket challenge, celebrities including Usher and Kelly Clarkson have taken part and now a woman is bringing the Diabetes Dance Dare to the UK.

Tina Donkin, from St John's, Worcester, has been asked to kick off the campaign nationwide and is hoping people in her hometown will be the first to take up the challenge.

Diabetes Dance Dare was launched by the American Diabetes Association to highlight the impact of diabetes.

People pick a song, record a 23-second video of themselves dancing, share on social media using the hashtag #DiabetesDanceDare then donate to charity.

  • Will you be taking part in the #DiabetesDanceDare? Send your videos to cp@worcesternews or Tweet @worcesternews.

The videos are 23 seconds long to symbolise that someone is diagnosed with diabetes every 23 seconds in the US.

Now the craze is making its way to the UK with the hopes of turning it into the next ice bucket challenge - which saw about 17 million people worldwide take part to raise money and awareness for motor neurone disease.

Mrs Donkin, who has type 1 diabetes, explained how she got involved.

"I bought a vest top from diabetes.co.uk that says Powered by Insulin on it.

"I sent the picture in to diabetes.co.uk and they then contacted me to ask if myself and my Zumba class would kick off the UK leg of the campaign.

"Of course I said yes.

"It is a little like the ice bucket challenge but this is to raise awareness of diabetes.

"You upload the video of yourself dancing for 23 seconds and then dare someone else to do the same thing.

"You tag diabetes.co.uk and also ensure you use the hashtag #DiabetesDanceDare.

"It is really simple and easy to do.

"The dare is huge in America with the likes of Usher and Kelly Clarkson taking part.

"I'm hoping people will take part to raise the awareness of diabetes.

"It it is a serious condition that affects every age group and that it can go undetected and untreated leading to sometimes severe medical implications.

"I also believe that it is important to promote that life with diabetes, as long as it is controlled, can be healthy and long.

"That's why I do the job that I do."

The 39-year-old fitness instructor was diagnosed at the age of five with type 1 diabetes and wears an insulin pump.

She led members of her zumba class as they danced along to the Time Warp which has been shared on Twitter and Facebook.

Other celebrities taking part in the challenge include singer Kelly Clarkson and her toddler daughter River Rose, basketball player Shaquille O'Neal and Fifth Harmony singer Camila Cabello.

In 2014, Diabetes.co.uk launched the record-breaking #BloodSugarSelfie campaign to raise awareness of World Diabetes Day, which received the 2015 EHI Award in the Best Use of Social Media to Deliver a Health Campaign category.
