A REFUGEE helper has spoken of the horrors faced by refugees in Turkey and Greece.

After visiting Turkey for ten years, Kerri Moor begun to help co-ordinate efforts to help aid refugees there.

Ms Moor, who lives in Foregate Street, started to volunteer in Greece with a group called 'No Them Only us. Refugee and Displaced Persons Support' as a co-ordinator.

She said: "The situation is unexplainable, I don't think refugees would survive without small groups and NGO's helping them.

"It is unbelievable how difficult the position that so many of these refugees are in and they need help.

"The government in Greece simply does not have enough money to help refugees."

Ms Moor, 46, helps to collect blankets, towels, sleeping bags, clothes and hygiene products before delivering them to those in need as well as organising life-saving medical treatment.

The group work with hospitals in refugee heavy areas including having a surgeon in Syria who performs life-saving surgeries on people before they are moved to Jordan or Lebanon.

Ms Moor, has been helping refugees for nearly a year without a break, beginning in Lesvos Island in December after previously helping part-time in Turkey.

She then moved to Izmir in Turkey before the situation got too dangerous due to political developments in the country and she moved again, this time to Athens.

About her experiences she said: "It has been an incredible experience working with a group focused on the problem and working to help.

"All of the refugees react amazingly well to seeing us.

"After visiting Turkey for so long I have some friends out there, and when I saw the problems that refugees faced, I wanted to help.

"The work done there is vital but many lives are lost and more help is needed simply because of the high volumes passing through."

Ms Moor also highlighted the need for aid and items donations from businesses and urged Worcester businesses to come forward.

Local group People in Motion has already agreed to begin sending items over and a specific warehouse will be used to receive the donations.

The group was set up as a non-profit organisation who provide support and needed supplies to displaced people

When asked about whether other countries could do more, she said: "Absolutely. I believe somebody should create a system where all countries who can afford it have to help with aid money as they really should be doing more."

The group is constantly expanding with a team of ten new admins recently taken on.

The Facebook page now has nearly 3,000 members and can be found at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1558623994452924/
