A GREAT Britain mountain biker visited a local school as part of a scheme to get more people involved in sport.

Ruth Owen-Evans, a Sky Sports ambassador, visited Christopher Whitehead Languages College as part of the Sky Living for Sport initiative.

11 pupils across years from seven to ten are involved in the scheme, which gives them the chance to play different sports to improve their experience of physical activity.

Lisa Glass, P.E teacher at the school, said: "As part of the project we get an ambassador to come in for a day to work with the project.

"I was really impressed with the children yesterday they were really keen and really excited when Ruth came in.

"They were fantastic, they were talking about making a powerpoint presentation to show Ruth what they had done, the next time she comes in."

Pupils begun the project two weeks ago and it will run until February.

Thursday (October 20) was the first time Ms Owen-Evans came into speak to the children, but she will do so once more before February.

Mrs Glass added: The project is about helping pupils who have never really enjoyed P.E to gain confidence and to have some fun playing different sports.

"They have only just started the project but will be playing sports like bench ball and corner ball we try to make the sports not like a lesson, by playing less mainstream sports.

"We hope the pupils involved will gain social skills and have fun, as well as wanting to take part in activities outside of school."

"Everyone is really impressed with it, other students ask me why they can't do the project as well."

As well as the 11 pupils, two top set students are co-ordinating the project.

Mrs Glass said: "This will help them teach leadership and planning as well as helping them to gain confidence.

"Also they might not know people in the bottom set so well so it will help them to socialise with different people.

"We have been doing the project now for seven years and it has done fantastically well."

As well as spending time with the project, Ms Owen-Evans, a cross country mountain bike racer also spoke to GCSE and A-Level students about sport psychology and physical training.

In her career she has been a double Welsh National Cross Country Mountain Bike Champion, an England and European Champion as well as qualifying for Cross Triathlon World Championships in 2015 and 2016.
