THIS is how Droitwich’s revamped High Street could look once a “desperately needed” £650,000 improvement project is completed.

The artist's impression was revealed by Worcestershire County Council, following a meeting with Wychavon District Council at which the project was given the green light.

The councils are jointly funding the work, which will see the uneven road and pavement surfaces improved and a raised pedestrian crossing point installed.

It is hoped the overhaul will help attract more tourists and shoppers to Droitwich, while improving conditions for residents and existing businesses.

Councillor Ken Pollock, county council cabinet member for economy, skills and infrastructure, said: "These improvements in Droitwich are part of a county-wide investment programme into our key towns and city centres.

"This clearly demonstrates both our commitment to keeping all of Worcestershire open for business, and forms part of the drive for a World Class County.

"We aim for a world class Worcestershire for everyone, not just those benefiting from the big investment sites like Worcester Six and the Malvern Hills Science Park."

Droitwich Town Council has also funded further enhancements to make it easier to run event in the High Street.

Materials will be used reflecting the High Street's historic character while the number of on-street parking spaces will remain largely unchanged.

County councillor Pam Davey, who represents Droitwich East, said: “I am delighted that this scheme is now going ahead. These improvements are desperately needed to enhance the town and ensure everyone can safely access the High Street.

"The local people of Droitwich will get the High Street they deserve and I am sure this will have far reaching benefits for visitors and the local economy."

Work is expect to begin in either the Spring or Summer next year, once infrastructure maintenance work has been completed by Severn Trent Water.

An exhibition of the plans will go on display at Droitwich Library from Monday, November 28, until the following Friday, December 2.
