A BINGE drinker lunged at his mum with a kitchen knife and poured disinfectant over his dad’s face, causing him to fear for his life, a court was told.

Daniel Winnall was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court for battery and affray at his parents’ home in Albert Street, Droitwich on September 13 and 14 last year.

Daniel White, prosecuting, said Janet Winnall had described her son as ‘a binge drinker' who could become abusive under the influence of drink or drugs.

On September 13 Mrs Winnall advised her son to leave his bank card at home to ‘stop him buying drugs or getting any more drunk’.

But he returned four hours later at around 4.30pm, demanding money. Mrs Winnall, who could smell alcohol on her son’s breath, said: “Don’t you think you’ve had enough?”

He told his mum ‘you have no right to keep my money from me'.

Winnall tried to grab her handbag, his mother telling him ‘get off me’.

After around 10 minutes, the strap snapped.

During the struggle that followed Mrs Winnall, who has osteoarthritis, fell to her knees, causing her pain.

Winnall left the house and returned at 1am the next morning, climbing over the roof to his room.

The affray happened later that day (September 14) after Jon Winnall, the defendant's father, said his son was no longer welcome at the house.

Mr White said Winnall told his father: "I’m going to take your head off one of these days.”

Winnall smashed a vase which his mother began clearing up with a vacuum cleaner.

He then lunged at his father, pinning him by the neck to the back of the chair, causing him to gasp for breath before pouring disinfectant over his face but not in his mouth.

Mr White said: “Mr Winnall thought he was about to kill him. He feared for his life.”

Winnall then picked up a kitchen knife, Mr White said.

“He lunged with the knife towards Janet. That knife went within one inch of her of her right hand side. It was only luck that stopped the knife going into her," he said.

Abigail Nixon, defending, said: "He accepts this has destroyed his parents’ trust.

"It’s burned a major bridge and he’s ashamed and sorry for what has happened. Alcohol is the root cause of what happened.”

Miss Nixon said Winnall had always worked hard as a welder and had been abstinent from drink and drugs for a year, described as the best year of his life, before he began taking them again. He has attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Judge Nicholas Cole said: “This sort of drunken violent incident could have had more severe consequences.

"Someone could have been stabbed or possibly killed. It is clear you parents have done everything they could to help you.”

For the affray he sentenced Winnall to eight months in prison but suspended the sentence for 18 months.

He attached an alcohol treatment requirement and ordered him to complete a 40 day rehabilitation activity requirement.

For the battery he sentenced Winnall to two months in prison concurrent with the eight months and again suspended it for 18 months.
