THREE good causes supporting Worcestershire wildlife are to receive a share of £7,000 as part of Tesco's Bags of Help initiative.

But the amount received by Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, Wychavon District Council and the Friends of Avon Meadows will depend on a customer vote.

Supermarket shoppers are being given the chance to vote for their favourite of three projects throughout December, with the votes deciding who receives a share seeing grants of £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000.

Voters are able to take part in the vote at the Tesco Express shops in Droitwich, Pershore, Warndon, Henwick Park and Foregate Street in Worcester, as well as the Tesco Extra stores in Worcester's Warndon and St Peter's.

The supermarket has teamed up with Groundwork for the Bags of Help initiative, using money raised from the 5p bag levy.

The money for the trust will be used to support the Wildlife Explorers at Lower Smite farm project, helping to ensure children have a wild place to visit to learn about wildlife.

Droitwich Community Woods project sees volunteers planting new trees and flowers for wildlife and transforming the area, while the Friends of Avon Meadows is a voluntary group caring for the nature reserve and community wetland in Pershore.

Richard Stott, chairman of the friends, said: “As a small community group, we rely on the generosity of the local community.

“Through the Tesco Bags of Help scheme, we will be able to support them in return, with more tools, more equipment and greater access to training."

Wendy Carter, from Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, said: “We’re all delighted to have been chosen to receive funding from Tesco - it will be the wildlife that will ultimately win.”

Liz Etheridge, wildlife projects officer at Wychavon District Council, added: “In this season of goodwill, we wish the best of luck to all the projects nominated, knowing that each of them will make a big difference to their local environment and community.”
