A PENSIONER has died after veering off the road and crashing into a tree on a road between Lechlade and Fairford.

The 67-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which happened just before 11am in Hambidge Lane today.

It is believed he lost control of the vehicle while driving due to the icy conditions, and crashed into a field.

A Gloucestershire police spokeswoman said: "The collision occurred shortly before 11am when the green Land Rover Freelander left the road to its nearside, on a straight section of road, before colliding with a tree.

"MoD police officers from RAF Fairford and members of the public assisted the man with first aid and CPR but, despite their efforts and the attendance of the Wiltshire Air Ambulance, the man was confirmed deceased shortly before midday.

"Another person, believed to be the man's granddaughter, has been taken to hospital in Swindon as a precautionary measure.

"The road remains closed whilst officers from the constabulary's Tri-Force collision investigation unit carry out their investigations. It's hoped it will reopen at around 3.30pm."

She added: "Officers would like to speak to two cyclists who were in the vicinity of the collision shortly after it happened or anyone else who may have witnessed the incident."
