A PARKS officer has spoken of her regret that two large oak trees in Droitwich must be felled.

Wychavon District Council announced this week that they will need to fell two large oak trees at the north side of Showell Pond, Droitwich.

Lynn Stevens, senior parks and greenspace officer at Wychavon, said: “All our mature trees are surveyed on a regular basis and when recently inspected the trees unfortunately were shown to have basal rot.

"It is with a heavy heart that we have made the decision to fell these trees as we never like to fell a tree unless it is absolutely necessary.

"Trees play such an important role in our eco systems and the general character of our environment, so this is sad news.”

The roots will be left in the ground as to remove them could destabilise the pond bank and the trunks will be cut to fence height as one of the trees is straddled between the garden fence panels and to cut them to ground level would disrupt the garden fence boundaries.

Work will be carried out this month, depending on weather conditions.
