WORCESTER'S new swimming pool is closed just a week after it opened because the centre has no water supply.

Perdiswell Leisure Centre has been without running water since around 7pm last night.

Last Saturday, thousands of people queued for the chance to glimpse the new £10.5 million facilities but today the pool was closed because the centre has no water for shower and toilet facilities.

The Leisure Centre has said the pool will be shut tomorrow morning and swimming lessons cancelled.

A spokesman said: "There has been a problem with the water supply at Perdiswell Leisure Centre and as a result it has not been possible to open the pool today.

"Other facilities including the gym have been operating as normal.

"An engineer will be attending on Sunday morning and we hope the pool will be operating normally as soon as possible."

It was originally thought that a water main had burst on Bilford Road.

However, Severn Trent Water says that is not the case and the lack of water is due to "a private issue".

A Severn Trent Water spokeswoman said: “This morning our teams attended to a no supply call at Perdiswell Leisure Centre, Worcester.

"After an investigation, the issue was found to be private and not something that Severn Trent are responsible for.

"No other properties are affected and there are no issues with any of our pipes or assets.”

Visitors can still use the gym, fitness studio, sports hall and other 'dry' facilities at the Leisure Centre.

Anyone who wants to visit the centre has been advised to take bottled water with them.

The Leisure Centre opened last Saturday and boasts an eight-lane 25m pool, a smaller multi-use pool, new gym, fitness studio, sports hall and more. It is run by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Worcester City Council.
