WORCESTER'S new swimming pool has reopened after water supply problems forced it to shut a week after it opened.

The pool at Perdiswell Leisure Centre was closed yesterday with swimming lessons and Aqua sessions cancelled.

It had to close because the Bilford Road centre lost running water at around 7pm on Friday night leaving it without toilet or shower facilities.

Thousands queued for the chance to glimpse the new £10.5 million centre, which is run by Freedom Leisure for Worcester City Council, when it opened on Saturday, January 7.

But people took to social media yesterday to express their frustration that the pool was shut to the public so soon after opening.

Jade Marshall said: "There goes my day out with the kids. It's been open minutes.. and something goes wrong."

The centre said the problem was fixed at around 8.35pm last night.

It is now thought a drop in water pressure caused the leisure centre's computer to shut down the whole system in a bid to safeguard it.

A post on their facebook page read: "Contractors helped sort this issue after we took the decision to cancel lessons and aqua (fixed at 8.35pm).

"Lessons and Aqua will be replaced by an open swim - if you were due to take part in these sessions then please come to the open swim and bring a friend for free.

"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and we hope to see you all again soon."

It was first thought to be due to a burst water main in Bilford Road but Severn Trent Water said that was not the case and the lack of water was due to "a private issue".

A Severn Trent Water spokeswoman said: “Our teams were made aware of a leaking stop tap on Bilford Road, Worcester on Friday (13th), the leak was affecting only one property and the team attended and repaired the leak that night, returning everything back to normal.

"No other properties were affected by the leak or the repair.

“On Saturday (14th), our engineer attended to the Leisure centre to investigate a separate supply issue.

"On-site after a thorough investigation, they found the problem to be private, that the leisure centre then repaired.”

Visitors have been able to use the gym, fitness studio, sports hall and other 'dry' facilities at the Leisure Centre throughout although they were asked to take bottled water with them.

The Leisure Centre boasts an eight-lane 25m pool, a smaller multi-use pool, new gym, fitness studio, sports hall and more.
