A BIGGER family festival at one of the city's popular parks will be able to go ahead thanks to a lottery grant.

The Friends of Fort Royal Park and Commandery Gardens are celebrating after the Big Lottery announced it would receive £8,000.

Lynn Denham, chair of the Friends' group, said: "We are thrilled to announce that we have received £8,000 from the Big Lottery fund to realise our vision of holding a One World in Our Park Festival in Fort Royal Park.

"This will enable us to put on a bigger family event than ever.

"We are looking forward to a wonderful celebration, sharing different foods, music and dancing and sharing memories of the park."

The grant award has come from a new Lottery Fund called Celebrate! which was set up to support projects that bring communities together to celebrate and share their diverse cultures.

The Friends of Fort Royal Park and Commandery Gardens were supported in their bid by C&T who are a small international creative group based at the University of Worcester and specialise in community digital technology.

It is hoped that the 'One World in Our Park Festival' will take place at the end of August as part of the Worcester Festival.

Leading up to the festival, the Friends are planning a number of workshops for children and young people to cook with chefs from diverse culinary backgrounds and to develop music and dance performances to share on the day.

There will be other opportunities for people to get involved by sharing their stories and photos of Fort Royal Park.

Their memories will be woven together by C&T to create a social history of the park which will be installed in Fort Royal using smart technology.

Max Allsup, assistant director at C&T said: "Fort Royal Park is one of the most beautiful and historically significant locations in our great city.

"As a local arts charity, C&T are extremely excited to be a part of the One World in Our Park Festival.

"We think a unique mesh of community activities, state of the art digital technology and cultural celebration will make for a highlight of the year.

"We hope to see you there."
